Willie Cole

Willie Cole

The Sole Sitter,2013

Bronze

72 x 27 x 42 inches

Willie Cole (b. 1955, New Jersey) is best known for assembling and transforming ordinary domestic and used objects such as irons, ironing boards, high-heeled shoes, hair dryers, bicycle parts, wooden matches, lawn jockeys, and other discarded appliances and hardware, into imaginative and powerful works of art and installations. His work surprises and delights the viewer, while commenting on everyday objects and our relentless consumption. As an African American artist of national and international importance, his work is at home in the City of Atlanta’s public collection.

Cole's work is often considered eclectic and postmodern. Employing the same object in multiples, his work combines references to art, to African imagery, to Surrealism, Dada, American pop culture and more. Sole Sitter, the work proposed for Atlanta, is an iconic example of Cole’s sculpture. At first glance it resembles a contemporary iteration of African masks and sculpture. Further viewing reveals the entire work is comprised of shoes. Like much of Cole’s work, Sole Sitter is a highly original and witty assemblage.

Cole has a personal connection to Atlanta: he was the recipient of the Lamar Dodd Fellowship at the University of Georgia, and in 2006 he was awarded the David Driskell Prize by the High Museum of Art. Sole Sitter, is representative of the best of his work – witty, thought provoking, delightful.

Renew Atlanta will install this work along Peachtree Street in Midtown. It will included in the pocket park to be built at Commercial Row Commons – Peachtree and Peachtree Place.

This installation is possible through partnership with Midtown Alliance.

Byung Hoon Choi

Byung Hoon Choi afterimage of beginning 016-471, 2016 Basalt 89 x 35.5 x 23.75 inches

Byung Hoon Choi (b. 1952, Korea) represents a departure from the kind of sculpture cities commonly acquire and collect. Instead of being loud, aggressive, and full of commentary and reference to contemporary life, these works are quiet. They create mind space. They alter our state of being, becoming meditations. Special procurement designation is requested for Choi because his artwork uniquely beautiful; because it brings peace to the viewer. Choi is interested in traditional Korean craft and Asian values. He is known for elevating the traditional techniques, fusing them with modern aesthetics. He works in natural materials: wood, clay, granite and natural stone, always balancing Buddhist ideas of introspection with Taoist notions of balance.

The work purchased for Atlanta exemplifies that balance. Choi uses basalt, a material he chose for what it reveals and what it represents. When split open, basalt has sleek interior – the material itself is a contrast of both rough and smooth, light and dark, inner and outer. Choi explains:

"Basalt… was formed billions of years ago when magma erupted… the exterior is made of rough earth, but the interior is a black color. I thought the tension created by the contrast between outside and inside makes it a very suitable material for the expression of my art. Through this, all the true values of the universe are expressed inside..." (Byung Hoon Choi, designboom, November 11, 2016)

Katharina Grosse

Katharina Grosse

O.T. [Cut Y], 2019

Acrylic on bronze

20 ½ x 73 ¼ x 44 ½ inches

Katharina Grosse (b. 1961, Germany) is a wildly joyous painter. Her work would be unique to the City of Atlanta because of her exuberance and references to graffiti. Her style echoes our culture of street art and elevates the entire art form.

Grosse works with a paint gun and gorgeous, electrifying acrylics. She is known for embracing unexpected events and incidents as they arise in her work. Splashes, drips, blends all become a part of a larger pattern. She frequently works in situ, painting directly onto landscapes, architecture, streetscapes and interiors. Her work is extraordinary in its formal investigation of color combined with its immersive full body experience. In public works, Grosse is known for creating outdoor rooms that pull in the viewer, providing an experience that borders on hallucinogenic surreality.

The work proposed for Atlanta is typical to her sculptural works. Wild color covers a natural-esque form, leaving the viewer to question what it was she just encountered. Grosse’s work would bring international explorations and conversations to Atlanta’s art world.

Renew Atlanta will install this work in Freedom Park, a linear commuter parkway through one of Atlanta’s most dense areas. Freedom Park neighborhoods claim 10% of the City of Atlanta’s population (almost 50,000 residents) and close to 150 transit stops. Designated as the City of Atlanta’s Art Park in 2007, Freedom Park is home to several temporary and permanent artworks.

This installation is possible through partnership with the Freedom Park Conservancy, and the Candler Park Neighborhood Association.

Jaume Plensa

Jaume Plensa Self Portrait III, 2017 Stainless steel 122 x 129 ⅛ x 129 ⅛ inches

The City of Atlanta has acquired Self Portrait III, a piece which contains all the elements of Plensa’s large body of work. Lettering from nine languages -- Hindi, Chinese, Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese, Cyrillic, Tamil and Greek – form a globe around the seated figure of a man, also composed of letters. With humanity at the center of a global cacophony, this is art that speaks to the ability to communicate across national and cultural boundaries. Discussing a similar work, Plensa explains: “Many times we talk and talk… but we are not sure if we are talking with our own words or repeating just messages that are in the air. My intention is to offer something so beautiful that people have an immediate reaction, so that they think, ‘What’s happening?’ And then maybe they can listen a little bit to themselves.” (Carol Kino, New York Times, 5/8/11) Acquisition of Self Portrait III is an embrace of Atlanta’s multiculturalism, internationalism and globalism.
